The History and Legends of Rose Quartz
Rose quartz was known to the ancient Egyptian, Roman and Tibetan cultures as well as the ancient Chinese.
Prized in the ancient world as both a stone of love and physical beautification facial masks of rose quartz have been recovered from ancient Egyptian tombs (1). It was thought by both the Romans and the ancient Egyptians to clear the complexion and prevent wrinkles.
Both Greek and Egyptian legends tell of the Gods using rose quartz crystal to maintain their youth and beauty.
One Greek legend tells a beautiful tale of the origins of rose quartz. In this legend Adonis the lover of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite was attacked by Ares the God of war in the form of a boar. Aphrodite rushed to save him and caught herself on a briar bush. Her blood dropped onto the clear quartz crystal staining it forever pink.
The fact that it was the blood of Aphrodite the Goddess of love that created the beautiful pink colour shows clearly the ancient association between rose quartz and love.
It is also believed that ancient healers in Australia made a sacred water out of this stone that was believed to be a panacea (2).
At various stages in antiquity it has also been known as the heart stone, Bohemian ruby or Silesian ruby. Love tokens of Rose quartz have been found that are believed to date from 600BC (3).
