Your Ritual: What Order to Use Your Facial Tools

This is the question we are asked more than any other. You have a gua sha, a roller, perhaps a cup, an oil, and no idea whether they go before or after each other, before or after moisturiser, morning or night. Nobody tells you, because most of the brands selling these tools have never actually treated anyone.

Here is the order we teach, why it is that order, and how to build up to the full ritual without buying everything at once.

Written by Kamila Kingston, qualified acupuncturist and co-founder of White Lotus Beauty, established 2004. Last reviewed September 2026.

The one rule that decides everything

Every tool you own moves fluid. That is most of what they do. So the question of order is really the question of where the fluid is going, and the answer is always the same: towards the nodes that drain it, which sit in front of and behind the ear and down the side of the neck.

Which means the ritual has a direction. You work from the centre of the face outwards and from the bottom upwards, and you finish by taking everything up and over the ear and then down the side of the neck to the collarbone. Never down the front of the neck. If you remember nothing else from this page, remember the finish, because a session without it mobilises fluid and then leaves it sitting there.

Our facial lymphatic drainage guide covers that route in full, including why we take it over the ear rather than straight down.

The order

1. Cleanse

Clean skin, patted dry or left slightly damp. Nothing else to say.

2. Oil. Always.

No tool touches dry skin, ever. Dry skin means drag, and drag on the face means irritation, broken capillaries and, over time, the opposite of what you are trying to achieve. It also means the tool cannot glide, so the technique does not work.

Use more than feels sensible. Our organic green tea facial oil is made for this: enough slip to work with, and the adaptogenic herbs stay on the skin once you finish. A water based serum is not a substitute, because it absorbs in seconds and then you are back to dragging.

3. Cupping, if you are using it

Suction goes before scraping. Cupping lifts and decompresses the tissue and brings blood into the area, which makes everything that follows more comfortable and more effective. Five minutes, cup always moving, light suction. Two or three times a week rather than daily.

Full method in our facial cupping guide.

4. Gua sha. This is the main event.

Gua sha is where the contouring and the tension release happen, and it is the tool that rewards technique most. Jaw, cheeks, around the mouth, brow, always centre outwards and upwards, always finishing over the ear and down the neck. Three to five minutes.

Learn it properly from the complete guide to gua sha. Browse the tools in crystal gua sha, all genuine Grade A crystal, never chemically treated, and approximately 30% larger than standard gua sha tools.

5. Roller last, to cool and settle

The roller is not a weaker gua sha, it is a different job. It covers ground fast, it calms, and a cool stone is the most pleasant possible way to finish, particularly first thing in the morning or on a flushed face. Upwards only, never down. One to two minutes.

6. The eye area

Smallest tool you own, lightest pressure, on the bone rather than the soft tissue. Inner corner outwards under the eye, then along the brow bone. This is where most damage gets done by people being enthusiastic, so be dull about it.

7. The finish

Up and over the ear, down the side of the neck, three or four passes each side. Then press whatever oil is left into the skin with your hands rather than wiping it off.

8. Scalp and hair, if it is a scalp night

A crystal comb through the scalp, a few minutes of massage, and anything topical you are using from our hair range. Twice a week is plenty.

9. Then get out of your own way

Ear seeds if you are using them. Ten minutes on an acupressure mat if the day has earned it. Then a silk pillowcase and, if light or broken sleep is an issue, a silk eye mask, so that the eight hours after the ritual are not quietly undoing it against a cotton case.

Why that order and not another

  • Oil before everything, because drag is the only way to actually damage your face with these tools.
  • Suction before scraping, because cupping decompresses and warms the tissue, which makes gua sha more effective and more comfortable.
  • Gua sha before rolling, because gua sha does the detailed work while the tissue is warm and the roller is a broad finishing pass.
  • Cool last, because it calms everything you have just stimulated and leaves the skin looking settled rather than flushed.
  • Drainage always last, for the reason at the top of this page.

Morning or night?

Both, differently.

Morning, two minutes. Oil, roller, drainage finish. This is a depuffing ritual, not a sculpting one. A stone kept somewhere cool is worth the small extra effort here.

Night, five to ten minutes. The full sequence above. This is where the results come from, because you are working on warm, relaxed tissue and everything you apply stays on your face all night instead of being absorbed by a cotton pillowcase.

If you only have one slot, take the night one.

How often

Tool How often How long
Facial oil Daily, twice Ongoing
Gua sha Daily or five times a week 3 to 5 minutes
Crystal roller Daily, morning and night 1 to 2 minutes
Cupping 2 to 3 times a week 5 to 10 minutes
Scalp comb Twice a week 5 minutes
Ear seeds As needed Worn 3 to 5 days

Short and often beats long and occasional, by a wide margin. Four minutes every night for a month will do more than an hour once a fortnight, and it is the only version of this that people actually keep doing.

What does not go in the same session

  • Microneedling. Keep it on its own night. No cupping, gua sha or rolling over freshly needled skin, and follow the aftercare for the depth you used.
  • Acids, peels or strong actives. Not on a tool night. Alternate them.
  • Anything, on broken or infected skin. Work around active breakouts, cold sores and broken skin, or wait.
  • Recent injectables. Leave at least two weeks, and read using crystal tools after filler and botox first.

Building the kit, in the order that makes sense

You do not need all of it, and buying all of it at once is the reliable way to end up using none of it.

If you would rather do it in one go, the sets and kits pair the tools that belong together. Every crystal tool carries a lifetime guarantee.

Keep them clean

Oil and skin cells sit on these tools. Wash stone and silicone in warm soapy water after use, dry them properly, and store them out of direct sunlight. If you share tools or use them on clients, use our beauty tool cleaner between users. Rancid oil on a beautiful crystal is still rancid oil.
