How to Use the Black Obsidian Scalp & Body Massager

The Genuine Black Obsidian Scalp & Body Massager is hand-finished from Grade A natural black obsidian. Like every White Lotus crystal tool, the stone is never dyed and never chemically treated, so small variations in tone, pattern and weight are normal and are the signature of a genuine natural stone.

This guide walks you through the full routine shown on the insert that comes in the box: how to hold the tool, the three scalp strokes, the body directions, and how to clean and store your massager so it lasts. Watch the video first, then keep the diagram handy for your first few sessions.

Why the head, and why obsidian

Chinese medicine describes the head as the meeting place of all yang. The five prongs of the massager follow several channels of the scalp at once, which is why the routine below always works in the same direction: from the front, over the crown, to the base of the skull. The tool is designed to be used slowly, with the arrows on the diagram, rather than scrubbed back and forth.

Black obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. It is smooth, cool to the touch and holds a fine polished edge, which makes it well suited to a prong tool that glides through hair rather than catching in it. Because it is glass, it also needs a little care: it will chip if dropped, so hold it firmly and store it in its box between uses.

Follow the channels: the diagram

Work slowly, with the arrows. Head seen from above; body front and back.

How to use it on the scalp

Use dry, or after applying White Lotus Hair Thickening Spray. Hold the tool by the body of the stone, not the prongs.

  1. Midline. Place the prongs at the front hairline on the centre line of the head. Draw them slowly back over the crown to the base of the skull. Repeat five to seven times.
  2. Right side. Move the tool outward to the right and work parallel to the first stroke, from the front hairline back and down to the base of the skull. Repeat five to seven times.
  3. Left side. Repeat the same parallel strokes on the left side of the head.
  4. Finish at the crown. Close the routine with small, gentle circles at the crown.

Pressure should be comfortable and even. Let the weight of the stone do most of the work. If you use the Hair Thickening Spray first, apply it to the scalp, then follow with the massager so the prongs help distribute it along the strokes. You will find the spray in our hair care collection.

How to use it on the body

Apply White Lotus Body Oil first so the stone glides, then follow the arrows on the diagram. You will find the body oil in our body collection.

  • Legs: inner legs upward, outer legs downward.
  • Arms: inner arms from the chest to the palm, outer arms from the hand to the shoulder.
  • Back and shoulders: downward.

Use long, slow, unbroken strokes. The massager is not designed for the face; keep it to the scalp and body only.

Cleaning and storage

  • Clean with White Lotus Natural Tool Cleaner and dry with a soft cloth. You will find the cleaner in our tool care collection.
  • Do not soak the stone.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes.
  • Store it in its box.

Safety and care

  • Obsidian will chip if dropped. Never use a tool with a chipped or rough edge.
  • Do not use on broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, over varicose veins, or on the face.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • This is a cosmetic accessory and not a medical device. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you are pregnant, have a health condition or are receiving treatment, speak to your doctor before use.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the obsidian massager on dry hair?

Yes. On the scalp the massager is designed to be used dry, or after applying White Lotus Hair Thickening Spray. It does not need any product to be used on the scalp.

Do I need oil to use it on the body?

Yes. Apply White Lotus Body Oil first so the stone glides smoothly over the skin, then follow the directions on the diagram.

Which direction should I massage?

On the scalp, always from the front midline back over the crown to the base of the skull, then the same parallel strokes on the right and left. On the body: inner legs up, outer legs down, inner arms from chest to palm, outer arms from hand to shoulder, and back and shoulders downward.

How many strokes should I do?

Five to seven slow strokes for each of the three scalp lines, finishing with small circles at the crown.

Can I use it on my face?

No. The massager is designed for the scalp and body only. For the face, choose one of our gua sha tools or crystal rollers instead.

How do I clean it?

Spray with White Lotus Natural Tool Cleaner and dry with a soft cloth. Do not soak it, avoid sudden temperature changes, and store it in its box.

Is the obsidian genuine?

Yes. Every White Lotus massager is hand finished from Grade A natural black obsidian that is never dyed and never chemically treated. Small variations in tone, pattern and weight are normal and show that the stone is natural.

What if my massager gets chipped?

Stop using it. Obsidian is a natural glass and a chipped or rough edge should never be drawn across the scalp or skin.
