Microneedling Before and After: Amazing Results Revealed

For those of you that are considering incorporating this into your skincare regime, here are some great before and after photo graphs for you to view and an explanation of how it can benefit you.

It has become increasingly popular in the last 20 years. When we first started teaching therapists how to use collagen induction therapy we would spend most of our time educating them what it actually is. Quality equipment was not readily available and again, unknown as beauty tools. Many people came to our clinic to purchase them as they could not find them anywhere else.

Many people are curious because the results are phenomenal, so let's explore why!

What is microneedling and how does it work?

Image of beauty tools

It is very simply puncturing the skin using tiny needles of 0.25mm to 1.00mm using a dermastamp or dermaroller. It can be called dermarolling, skin needling or microneedling. There are different tools you can use from manual to electronic and stamps, pens or rollers.

Puncturing the skin creates a wound healing response which triggers many biochemical reactions in the skin that ultimately make the body induct collagen in the area that was microneedled.

This action itself means that it is a very helpful treatment for many skin conditions and also can be used to absorb increased amounts transdermally directly into the skin from the microscopic punctures that have been made as a result of the treatment. The noticeable change in skin texture that is reported is remarkable.

There are ample research articles around the world that have established the efficiency and microneedling benefits. This has given it an established place in many aesthetic clinics around the world.

For a detailed explanation of how it works please watch this video by Anthony Kingston a leading expert in the field:

Is microneedling safe for all skin types?

Beautiful african skin

Skin needling techniques have evolved from ancient acupuncture techniques that have been used safely for thousands of years in the Traditional Chinese Medicine system.

Unlike many skin treatments that can be problematic to darker skin, this has been used safely on all ethic skin types.

It can be safely used on :

  • Oily Skin
  • Combination Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Sensitive Skin- if using a metal free option
  • Normal Skin

It can also be used to treat a myriad of cosmetic issues. However you need to ensure you are using the correct needle length for your concern.

There are some contraindications that may make the procedure unsuitable in your own circumstances. Which is why it is always best to check with a doctor or dermatologist if you are unsure.

Can Microneedling help with acne scars?

acne scars before microneedling

Acne scars can be very hard to treat and cause great concern for those that have them.

Fortunately this has been proven to increase the appearance of scars by up to 70% by research.

It can get great results relatively quickly because it not only inducts collagen but breaks down the old scar tissue as a result of the procedure allowing fresh new layers of collagen to appear. Collagen production is vital for skin rejuvenation.

As you can see with this image was taken before using the White Lotus biopolymer scar reduction kit. You can see how the surface of the skin is uneven and raised with scarring across the cheek bones. A needle length of 1.00mm was used.

Again if you are unsure what you need speak to a dermatologist first to ensure you get the correct time and procedure

This image is after the 2nd treatment, you can already see that the skin texture is looking smoother, more even and the scars are fading.

There is again a substantial improvement in the acne scars and overall skin tone after only 3 treatments.

Here is the video of her performing the treatment that got these rapid results:

The influencer @elyzaxmae made this video to show what she did to treat her scars.

This was the update by @elyzama after 3 uses- impressive results

How often should I get microneedling treatments?

To improve skin texture, and get the best results for collagen production we recommend having a treatment once every 14 days.

Depending on what you are treating and the severity of it, you would need to do a minimum course of 3 treatments with many treatments ideally spanning 3- 6 months.

Once you get into the routine of using a dermaroller most people use it as maintenance on going after all you are only ever losing collagen. If you want to age well and keep your skin toned and wrinkle free it is best to use it ongoing and you will see the difference in your skin to your peers every decade.

Are there any side effects of microneedling?

As with all treatments you need to be careful to avoid any side effects by following correct instructions and using good quality equipment along with skincare products that are suitable for the procedure, keeping in mind products are absorbed up to 10,000 times into the blood stream after needling, meaning you need to use products that are safe and virtually edible.

Common side effects are:

  • Dry skin
  • Sun sensitivity
  • Sore skin
  • Redness
  • Itchy Skin
  • Nickel Allergies ( if you use a metal dermaroller or stamp and have a nickel allergy)
  • Infections if using unsanitary products.

These all should go away within a few hours and especially if you use the organic green tea oil after the treatment. Microneedling works by causing inflammation in the skin and triggering a wound healing response.

You should always use :

  • The correct needle length for your intention- no longer than 1.00mm is recommended fro home use.
  • Hygienic equipment
  • Only use on freshly cleansed skin
  • Have a shower after the treatment ( not a bath).
  • Don't use anything on your skin for 12 hours accept green tea oil or an alternative safe aftercare oil.

It is has been known for people to have adverse reactions to numbing cream with skin needling so again, if you use very good quality needles and techniques, you will find that the process is painful.

At white lotus we never recommend causing trauma to the skin that results in bleeding.

If you do suffer from side effects like itchiness it can be because it releases a histamine response in the skin, this can be relieved by taking an anti histamine or consult a physician to check first.

There is a list of key contraindications here for microneedling:

The following should not be rolled across -

  • broken skin
  • scabs
  • wounds
  • bleeding skin
  • blisters
  • rashes
  • warts
  • psoriasis
  • eczema
  • pustular or nodular rosacea
  • fungal infections
  • suspected cancerous growths
  • keloid scars
  • active pustular acne
  • cold sores.

You should also consult their doctor if taking any anti-coagulant medications other than aspirin and any drugs known to cause photo sensitivity or dryness such as Accutane medications.

Pregnant and breast feeding women should only perform dry needling where no products are used on the skin for at least 8 hours after treatment.

Can microneedling help with fine lines and wrinkles?

Yes! This treatment has become very famous with celebrities wanting to have fresh, glowing wrinkle free skin.

@niqimusic an Italian model, DJ and influencer used the white lotus dermaroller kit on her forehead to treat some fine lines for 3 months once a fortnight. The needle length used is a 0.5mm biopolymer metal free roller.

Below is a photo before :

This is after 3 moths of treatment using the White Lotus dermaroller kit for fine lines and wrinkles! Notice the change in skin texture from the collagen production.

This is what was posted on niqi's instagram account:

"I used the @whitelotus_beauty dermaroller on my forehead for 3 months
and the results speak for themselves 🖤 By now you know how much I adore this brand which has not
won a lot of awards for nothing 🥂"

How long does it take to see results from microneedling?

Results can be seen almost straight away with may reporting their skin glowing and the texture improving. It is also common for skin to feel and appear tighter.

Depending on what it is you are treating it can take longer to treat like hair loss, scars, hyper pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles.

Treatments can be repeated in courses of six every 14 days and then repeated until you achieve the desired result. Many keep up maintenance sessions of once a month to maintain the results.

It's common to encounter varying advice on the frequency of treatments; however, current research suggests that a gap of about 2 weeks between treatments is ideal. This interval allows the enzymes responsible for breaking down old collagen—which contributes to the appearance of scars—to peak and begin to subside. Creating new collagen without giving time for this process may not yield the smooth skin you're aiming for.

Additionally, needling too frequently could cause a more prolonged inflammatory response in the skin, which isn't conducive to the healing and regenerative process we're targeting with the procedure.

Professional treatments, on the other hand, are generally recommended every 4 to 6 weeks because they might involve deeper penetration of the skin. For at-home treatments with shorter needles and gentler application, some guidelines indicate that weekly use is possible, depending on your skin's tolerance and reaction.

As each individual's skin can differ in sensitivity and healing capacity, It is strongly advised to following the product-specific guidelines provided with your roller and, if in doubt, consult with a skincare professional to determine a schedule that will be most effective for your individual skin type and condition.

What is the cost of microneedling treatments?

This is a how long is a piece of string question.

Depending on your location, and whether you visit a therapist for a treatment in their clinic or use a home use dermaroller or stamp, or both.

Typically treatments can be several hundred dollars including a take home aftercare oil.

You can buy a high quality kit to use at home or in between clinic visits that can be cost effective and support your treatments for just over one hundred dollars. The beauty tool will last a year of continued use at white lotus. It is also designed for sensitive skin, being metal free and made of biopolymer.

Is there any downtime after a microneedling session?

If you use the techniques that we have developed from our famous clinic and taught around the world, based on our best selling book " Holistic microneedling" there is no downtime and should prevent any side effects using our proven protocols.

If your skin is bled using a long needle length and retinols used it could take up to 6 weeks. The skin will be red, sensitive and very dry, you also have to be careful to avoid infections.

This is why it is very important to check with a clinic prior to starting, what techniques they use and products

Can microneedling help with stretch marks?

An example of stretch marks on the thigh

Yes! It has been shown to have great skin rejuvenation results on the skin and research supports the use of a dermaroller for stretch marks as well as cellulite.

The treatment is very similar to treating acne scars. This is because stretch marks and cellulite are caused by misaligned collagen fibers. Using a dermaroller will break down the build up of collagen in the skin and start to build a new layer of collagen. This ultimately results in a smoother skin texture and appearance.

Typically you need to use longer needle size like 1.00mm and have treatments every 14 days. You can see the dermaroller kit for stretch marks to view more about how useful it is at treating them.

Is microneedling painful?

A lady experiencing pain

Not if you use our painless techniques, protocol and quality needles (especially biopolmer which is metal free and designed for sensitive skin).

Remember we are talking about using a needle length of 0.25mm, 0.5mm, 1.00mm.

Using poorly manufactured needles can cause pain , damage and trauma to the skin. if you buy a roller or stamp for a couple of dollars don't expect to be buying a quality made, sanitary item.

Traditional medical skin needling was highly painful and using very long needles that bled the skin and anesthetics. However you can achieve wonderful results using the techniques we have coined. We have a online course for therapists that runs through how to treat each area of the body and cosmetic concern.

70 therapists were surveyed who attended training. 90% reported the techniques as painless after receiving their first treatment in training.

How does microneedling compare to other skin rejuvenation treatments?

A man having a laser treatment

There are other treatments on the market that can help improve the skin's appearance, however they can have significant side effects and often cause unnecessary trauma and downtime for the skin. For example laser, microdermabrasion, botox and injectables are all readily available.

Derma rolling is the only one that uses your own body to heal naturally and does not damage the surface of the dermis, or use toxic ingredients.

In fact a treatment can be totally organic and vegan and utilize holistic beauty and alternative medicine principles. No other treatment that delivers results for :

  • Scars
  • Fine Lines & Wrinkles
  • Stretch Marks
  • Cellulite
  • Hair Loss
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma

can claim this or even suggest that they can support your wellness and self care regime.

Holistic Microneedling is based on the principle that it supports your inner wellness as well as your experience. It is based on acupuncture and Chinese medicine principles and uses practices and ingredients that have been used safely on humans for thousands of years, unlike other cosmetic procedures.

It means you can get the results you want without sacrificing your health and resulting in additional cosmetic issues that can result from laser or fraxel resurfacing for example.

Utilising the best needle technology is also super important, white lotus uses metal free biopolymer which avoids nickel allergies and is designed for sensitive skin.

Are there any risks associated with microneedling?

If it is performed correctly by a qualified therapist using good materials and appropriate skincare and protocols, there are rarely any risks reported.

However please note that it is not suitable for everyone and there are certain contraindications as listed above that should not undergo a treatment.

If you were to have a treatment under those circumstances when it is contraindicated then you would be putting yourself at unnecessary risk and a therapist would be unlikely to treat you if they were aware.

Over the years we have heard horror stories from using dodgy tools that damage the skin through to applying totally inappropriate products afterwards and experiencing severe side effects as a result.

These are all easily avoided if you follow the advice, tools and protocols by Anthony who is an international expert in the field and author of the best selling amazon book "holistic microneedling".

How do I prepare for a microneedling treatment?

To ensure you get the best outcome follow these simple steps:

  • Make sure you are hydrated and not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol prior to a treatment.
  • Apply a suitable dermaroller oil like the organic green tea oil to the skin and then roll gently 10-15  times working from the mid line outwards and upwards wherever possible.
