COSMETIC ACUPUNCTURE

What is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture has many names and means many different things to different people. In different countries it is called facial acupuncture, acupuncture facial rejuvenation and a natural face lift.

Essentially cosmetic acupuncture is the insertion of small acupuncture needles into the face in order to enhance the appearance. It is often considered a natural alternative to more invasive, synthetic techniques such as botulinum toxin and dermal fillers.

The other way that the understanding of cosmetic acupuncture differs is that the practitioner must have a strong foundation in traditional Chinese medicine. All acupuncture has its foundations in traditional Chinese medicine and unfortunately without this diagnostic basis cosmetic acupuncture is not very effective.

How does Acupuncture Facial Rejuvenation work?

Many people now believe that cosmetic acupuncture works by inducting collagen below the surface of the skin to improve the appearance. This is true to an extent as all forms of skin needling do increase the body’s own natural collagen induction if they penetrate deep enough to reach the dermis. This is however, only a small part of the story. If you compare cosmetic acupuncture to a dermaroller you will see that the dermaroller is rolled on average across the skin 15 times creating an average of 215 puncture holes per square centimetre. This allows the derma roller to create a complete new sheet of collagen below the surface of the skin to create smoother skin.

A cosmetic acupuncturist in comparison may use up to 30 needles on the face. Collagen induction only takes place up to a depth of 0.6mm so much of the needle is below this level. This means that in fact very little collagen induction is taking place and yet you can achieve fantastic results with cosmetic acupuncture.

The answer is simple. When using cosmetic acupuncture you are regulating every part of the body to improve the faces appearance while specifically targeting problem areas of the face to also treat the body.

In traditional Chinese medical face reading every line or blemish on the face represents problems with specific organs in the body. Treating these lines or blemishes you are in fact treating the body. Additionally by employing all the TCM diagnostic skills to ascertain the state of the health you can predict which areas of the face will be showing signs of aging. You can then take this further and treat specific organs to improve the appearance of these areas of the face.

It is only by employing this complete holistic approach that you can hope to achieve results comparable to what is offered in mainstream beauty clinics. In fact a good cosmetic acupuncturist really has to have a higher TCM understanding than many therapeutic acupuncturists if they plan to practice the traditional way and achieve fantastic results.
